Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

12-14-11 I also just received a potentuial scam from Rolland Moore:

From: rolland moore [mailto:babawilly04@gmail.com]

Thanks for the response according to the description, I'm okay with the price and the condition pasted on Craigslist. I'm ready to make instant purchase. My mode of payment would be in certified cashiers check drawn from a local Bank of America where i will arrange for local pick up as soon as you get the payment, because that is the only convenient means for me and i promise everything will go smoothly. I really wish to be there to see the item but i don't have chance cause I'm a very busy person. Concerning the pick up, I will arrange for it after you receive the payment and it clears. Please get back to me with below information so that i can proceed with the payment immediately if you are selling to me.

Name:
Address:
City:
State:
Postal Code:
Phone Number:
(NOT P.O BOX)
Total amount for the item

And as soon as this is provided, the payment will be overnight to you and i will let you know when its mailed out. Thanks and i hope we handle this in good faith while waiting to hear from you.

Regards

Craigslist scam William Steeve

Mon, 2011/02/07 - 22:44

Yet another attempt by William Steve to conduct nefarious activity on Craigslist. Dumb ass doesn't even think of using a different name!

First Email:
Available for sale? would love to buy it right away.

Second Email:
Hello,
Thanks for your prompt responds, However, i will need your name and address for payment,As am only able to make payment by money order at this time b/c i am away on assignment.
It will be nice if you can send me more pictures. It will take about 4days for payment to get to you.

As per pick-up, I will make arrangement for the pick-up after payment has been received by you. I don't mind adding sixty dollars so you can keep it in my favor.

Please take the posting off today and consider it sold to me, Include your phone number.

Expecting to hear from you soon.
Regards
William Steeve.

Third Email:
Hello,
I have given my assistant the go ahead to mail payment to you.You should receive payment within the coming week( 4-5days time).
Once payment is received we can proceed with the pickup. Thanks for your understanding and patience.
Regards,
William Steeve.
Fourth Email:
Hello,

I hope you are fine and alright. I have been busy myself but doing great. There is something i think i must bring to your notice.

After a reconciliation of my account , i discovered that somehow my assistant must have over paid you. The payment that was meant for another transaction was sent to you and the one meant for you was sent to another, however i want to believe i wont have a problem with you.

Please once you receive your payment, i will like you to deduct your money and send the remaining via western union to the shipping company that will help me with the pick-up. I will ask them to contact you as soon as possible .Let me know
as soon as you get your payment.
Warm regards.

William Steeve.

See "The scam is that they

Mon, 2011/02/14 - 12:59

See "The scam is that they claim" entry on page 115.
From what I have read, the spam works as:
1. the money order has already been cashed, or
2. you get the money order and try cashing it and it takes a couple of days to process, but the buyer overpaid and ask for some of the money back. You honestly pay them but then after a couple of days the money order does not clear.

It seems like these people are far away, i.e. Nigeria, so they won't be able to harm you. But they will have your legal name and billing address for your accounts... so that's no fun. :(

Good luck!
btw, I got an email from William Steeves.

William Steeve fraud. I

Mon, 2011/03/14 - 21:47

This guy almost fooled me. Same story, over payment. But this time by over $1500. Asking me to take an extra $60 to keep my item for him. His secretary sent an over pmt blah blah blah. Smelled a rat. Actually got a bank check. One look at it and could tell it was fraudulent. It was drawn on a bank that I actually work for and I searched on our directory to see if such an employee even exists. Of course not.

I receieved the exact same correspondence emails (literally word for word)from sarah Johnson. I decided to goolge it when the spelling in the email address did not match the spelling of her name and specific questions asked of her were not answered.

Hey, here's another name to be aware of: "Joe Mathew" . The email comes from
Joe Mathew using as his email address.
I received the same kind of response from this clown also for another ad posted on
craisglist. I smelled a rat and ignored his offer. Jerk-off!

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I'm going on a vacation to London but I will instruct my assistant to prepare and mail your payment which I'm sure you will get in about 4 - 6 business days. I'll add $20 extra for the delay. I'll pay by M O or cashier check so send me your info (i.e full name, mailing address and your phone number) so payment can be mailed out immediately. I will also make arrangement for pick-up which will be after you must have received and cashed the payment.
Awaiting your info.
Thanks
