Hi guys - I'm glad you didn't
Wed, 2009/12/16 - 19:45Hi guys - I'm glad you didn't fall for this scam either. I feel sorry for people that may not be as comfortable with the internet and could get caught. I have just spoken with paypal regarding this scam (Mark Smith, the oceanographer), as I received this email about wanting to buy my car. They are aware of the scam and said what usually happens is that when you provide your email address for the paypal transaction they then send an email (as if it was from western union or similar company) saying that you must transfer $1000 to receive the full transaction money from paypal. Of course, it's just a scam. You will never have to do anything to get that money from paypal in the real world.
Lets not fall for these bloody scammers!
Hope this info helps :)

Mark Smith
Mon, 2010/04/19 - 15:25I received an e-mail from a Mark Smith at wedfcsdfr@googlemail.com. He wanted to buy my item at my asking price but needed my full address (not PO Box) and phone number. I asked him where he was and why he needed a PO Box and he just responded saying he needed my address asap. I did not send it... I don't know who this guy was, but it wasn't someone genuine.

HERE IS A SAMPLE OF THE EMAIL THEY SENT -- BEWARE - CRAIGSLIST LOS ANGELES SCAM
Hello,
Thanks for your response. A close friend of mine just
introduced me to craiglists so this is my first time. Am actually
getting the item for my brother,he just lost his apartment furniture
(fire outbreak) so if there is anything wrong with it, you let me
know. I would have loved to come and take a look but my jobs doesn't
give me much time. So am willing to pay via a certified check. I don't
mind paying an additional cost of $50 for it in order for you to take
the ad down from craigslist. My P.A will send the certified check to
you via courier service once i get your reply for the payment,I'm
going to need
1)Full name to be on the payment
2)Address which the payment would be delivered to
3)And your phone number
About the pick up, my mover would contact you as soon as you cash the
check, so dont bother about that.
Regards to your family.
Hoping to hear from you soon.

Same scammer!
Sun, 2010/09/19 - 20:10I just got an email from denisecrad@gmail.com with a very similar message. I googled the email address because it sounded fishy and this came up. Be careful out there, folks!
Here's the email I received as a response to a posting on the ATL craiglist:
Hello,
Thanks for your response. I just finished setting up an apartment
for my brother and he said he is interested in your item. So if there
is anything wrong with it, you let me know. I would have loved to come
and take a look but am presently at a seminar and my jobs doesn't give
me much time. On the other hand, my brother is quite unavailable.
So i will be making an instant payment through Paypal, i dont mind paying
an additional $50 for you to take down the advert from craiglist and reserve
it for me. So send me your paypal account id or you can easily set up one
at www.paypal.com if you dont have one. Paypal is safe and is the fastest
way to pay, thats why i use it. I have also informed my mover about the pick up.
After payment an appropriate time will be schedule for the pick up.
Regards to your family.
Hoping to hear from you soon.
