I recently listed a car for sale on craigslist and other local classified ad services. This is one reply I got, which is clearly an attempt at scamming:
From: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Subject: [The title of the classified ad for the car]Hello,I just viewed your car posting on craigslist and i have interest on it i will like to know the present condition and two more pictures of the car before i proceed with the transaction. Thanks
Problem is, the scammer is not very smart. I did not posted pictures to begin with, so there are no more pictures. So, I sent this reply:
From: meTo: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Pictures attached.
I intentionally did not attach any pictures. A genuine buyer would have noticed this of course. Instead, the scammer proceeded with the next step, revealing his true intent:
From Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>To: meHello,Thanks for your reply i got all your information about the car and am ok with it, i will be making your payment today i need your full name and address to make your payment today through electronic check i will handle the shipment myself. All what you need about the mode of payment is to get a Blank check paper and magnetic versa ink to print the check, the check will be sent to your email and you get it printed from it. You can get this materials from the following stores.1. Office Depot2. Office Max3. Staples Store 4. Stationery Store5. Compusa. When you get this materials you can print the check out and immediately after the printing you can then get the check cashed at your Bank or any bank of america branch around you I will wait for you to confirm and clear the check. The payment will be in excess as i will want you to contact my shipper with the excess fund for shipping the car after you must have confirmed and cashed the check.i will wait for your bank to clear the check so you can deduct your own money and send the excess fund to the shipper via Western Union Money Transfer so as to cover the cost of shipping the car from your place to it's destination. I will add extra 100$ for the purchasing of check paper and magnetic versa ink.For more information about the mode of payment you can check the website www.qchex.com and know more about it .Dont worry i will handle the shipping myself with my shipper. you can IM on this ID goldenwum10@yahoo.com or call me on 9145954296 for more information. Thanks and God Bless
This is a classic scam where a fake cheque is sent to the victim for more than the amount owed, and the difference is to be wired to the scammer.

Sound's Good,
I am interested in buying it from you asap.
The easiest way for me to pay is through (Electronic Bank Check).E-Check is simply a check delivery service that endorse and guarantee check delivery through E-mail instead of waiting for check in the Mail.No stamps, No envelopes, No going to the mail box - Just login to your e-mail and click a link to download and print the check.
Once the check has been printed it can be cash or deposited immediately.I have no problem with you waiting for the Check to go through in your bank or anything.I will handle pick-up when you must have gotten your cash at hand.
You will only need to purchase a Business Check Paper for printing of the check, it's sold for ($20) at any Stationery store's,Office Depot or Staples.I will re-reimburse you for the cost of supplies.Get the Business Check Paper today then email me your Name and Address with valid E-mail address for the E-Check Payment with steps to print it immediately.
I will await your response asap.

e-mails from the craigslist scam
Tue, 2010/10/26 - 18:16i posted my quad for sale on craigslist and the following day i receved this email
"scamer"
Can you please let me know if it's still available for sale?
Sent from my Iphone
"me"
yes the banshee is still available for sale. interested?
"scamer"
Thanks for your prompt response, i'm glad that it's still available for sale and satisfied with the price & condition, i'm currently out of town on rotations so i will not be able to come and look at it, the payment will be made through electronic business check which will required versa business check paper to receive the check and cash it, you can easily get the check paper from any of these stores (staples,
stationary stores, walmart) which cost $10, once the check is printed it's generally acceptable at any bank. I will make arrangement for the pickup by my private shipper and i will wait for the check to clear at your bank before we proceed with the shipment.
Thank You,
Joseph William
New Orleans, LA 70117
"me"
Joseph,
I am unfamiliar with your payment type, and honestly uncomfortable in handling it, i am more than willing to hold the quad for you for 10 days if you like. I would prefer that you send a money order or a cashiers check if possible. Sorry for the inconvenience. I can send you some pics if you like.
Thanks
no reply for 3 days until i sent him this
"me"
are you still interested in the banshee? didn't know if i should hold it for you.
"scamer"
sorry i can only make the payment through the e-check, e-check is new technology that is very fast, legit and verified certified check for online transaction, e-check is a check that will be send online to your email and you have to print the check out with check paper before
cashing it at your bank. If you really want to sell it to me, proceed to purchase the check paper and let me know when you have it for me to
send the e-check ASAP.
i did not respond to him anymore though i did make a report to the U.S Federal internet fraud complaint center.
hope this helps people identify scam e-mails

One crime does not justify another
Mon, 2010/11/01 - 11:20What perverted sense of justice is that?
One crime does not justify another crime.
What people did several centuries ago has nothing to do with people living now.
You are trying to justify your petty cowardly crime by giving it a Robin Hood like aura. Robin Hood was just a tale. The world does not work like that.
Your are committing a crime, you have no morals, plain and simple ...

Craigslist Internet Scam
Tue, 2010/11/02 - 20:25Just wanted to share a scam experience I just had from Craig's list. I was trying to sell a tool box for a pick up truck. Here's the series of emails that transpired lol.

Yet again!!!!
Wed, 2010/11/10 - 00:29I am at the point in my life where everything is too good to be true. So this guy isn't putting shit over my head. I listed a watch and he has messaged me about it (like 10 minutes ago), saying he will pay me $100 more than asking, blah blah blah. Basically, and no offense - seriously no offense here, but as soon as I noticed the semi-broken English and phone number I knew something was up.
I quickly copy and pasted his number into Google and was brought here. Seriously, people like this scammer are nothing but parasites, leeching and feeding off the hard working, honest individuals of society, for shame, you worthless types need to be exterminated.
Here are the e-mail addresses he used:
"James Lampad" james_lampad01@yahoo.co.uk
"James Rock" james.rock01@gmail.com
This guy is pretty stupid, he messaged from one account and replied from another, derp!!!

coming outta the woodworks tonight...
Wed, 2010/11/10 - 00:56And yet another person trying to scam me, maybe the same guy incognito? A little different approach, more subtle, showing more interest in the item rather than just wanting to pay for it right away. However, I am finding this more funny than irritating! These guys seriously think they are so smart and cunning, they are just hoping someone is greedy/stupid enough to take their offer.
This really cracked me up, in the last message from a Eunice Rose of Nigeria (LOL) she wanted to buy my watch at over $200 list price, so I decided to have some fun with them, I told them someone else just offered me $10k, I said I will consider selling to them if they offer me $15000 (LOL). So I figured they would have know I was playing around with them at this point, but nope, they come back and say okay, I have $8300 in my PayPal account, I will get my sister to transfer $4000, but no more than $12K! On an item I listed at $6900! I LOL'd right here, either this person was the worst negotiator in the existence of humanity or CLEARLY IT'S A SCAM!!!
Waiting to hear back from them or hopefully they get the message, personally, I don't mind messing around with them, it's kinda fun lol.
