  2. Mistaken Identity: How some people confuse my site for others

By Khalid on 2005/11/06 - 16:43, last updated 2006/08/27 - 20:33

Here is an email I got today:

The pilot to my water heater has shut off for no reason. It won't stay lit, even when I attempt to light it. The type is a Kenmore Mixer 6.Please get back to me asap, and tell me if this is a serious problem or if it is a minor detail that can be fixed at home.Thank you for your time,Fernando D.

Probably because of my post on Fixing a Sears Kenmore Water Softner.

More detail

Wed, 2009/07/29 - 02:23

Describe the problem in more detail. What do you mean, you reset according to the pamphlet? You took off the upper cover and pushed the red reset button until it popped?

What's the weather like, where the heater is installed?

Intermittent hot water not related to the external wiring, means the upper or lower thermostat is failing or has failed.

A new universal thermostat is about $10 and is not a hard DIY replacement job.

Is there a prescreen on these

Sat, 2009/08/08 - 10:04

Is there a prescreen on these heaters? It would be an external plastic screen mounted over the combustion air holes at the bottom of the unit.

If yes, is it clogged? Missing?

If missing, there may be another internal screen that is blocked and needs cleaned out. Then get the external screen installed.
If blocked, clean and then clean internal screen.

Same Problem Here. Only 1

Thu, 2009/09/03 - 03:34

Same Problem Here. Only 1 year old Power Miser 9. Did the screen cleaning, the burner cleaning and replaced the thermocouple. I really do not know what to do next to fix that piece of .....

Do you know if the parts are sold by anybody other than Sears. I do not want to do any business with them.

crappy sears water heaters

Sun, 2009/09/06 - 14:21

go to my web site and get an education on gas water heaters...

Weilhammerplumbing.com ...go to the second page and look at the
pictures I have taken of your Sears and Smith water heaters....

you will notice that it is nearly impossible to clean that air filter
under the water heater....

Please consider jsut getting a Rheem water heater

Take the old unit back to SEARS
SEARS willl take back that heater and
give you an in store credit for it..

their policy is to take anything back
so just force it down their throats..

Read my previous post dated

Read my previous post dated 7/17/08 on how I fixed the problem. My heater has no problem for a whole year now. Vaccum it only once the last 12 months.

Frustrated by cold water

Fri, 2009/10/16 - 00:25

I can't believe that my less than 2 year old hot water tank from Sears won't stay lit. When we relight the pilot and the heat turns on, it stays on only until the burner turns off and then it's out again. We've already paid $100 to have someone look at it and so we'll try the solution(s) noted here. I agree - shouldn't need to be cleaning this thing the keep it running. What a rip off.

Sears Miser 9 JUNK

Sun, 2009/11/29 - 18:34

My story sounds like everyone elses. After a year, pilot went out, was without hot water 3 weeks... after they couldn't fix it...tried to blame it on the vent. they replaced it...New one worked a year and is now going out. Long wait to get service...DON'T BUY YOUR HOT WATER HEATER FROM SEARS....IT'S JUNK....AND THEIR SERVICE IS HORRIBLE. They most likely can't get this one to work either. I will never purchase from sears...I needed a riding lawn mower and my sister suggested sears....NO WAY...with the experience with the hot water heater, I want nothing to do with them.

Sears water heater

Fri, 2009/12/04 - 00:56

I bought a kenmore water heater. The pilot went out the FIRST day. It goes out after every time it reaches setpoint. Unbelievable pile of crap. Where is the class action?
