Here is an email I got today:
The pilot to my water heater has shut off for no reason. It won't stay lit, even when I attempt to light it. The type is a Kenmore Mixer 6.Please get back to me asap, and tell me if this is a serious problem or if it is a minor detail that can be fixed at home.Thank you for your time,Fernando D.
Probably because of my post on Fixing a Sears Kenmore Water Softner.

Sears water heater will not stay lit
Tue, 2008/04/08 - 09:01I have the same problem. I was told by the Sears repairman that I had to vacuum around the bottom. This actually worked for a couple of months. Now every time the pilot goes out, I vacumm. My old water heater lasted 20 years and I NEVER had to do this...

RE: Power Miser 12 - a big piece of junk!
Wed, 2008/08/06 - 18:31I doubt that your less than 2 year water heater has a tank leak. They can also leak from the water inlet and outlet plumbing, the T&P valve, the drain valve or just from condensation.

I am not good on plumbing,
Fri, 2008/02/29 - 12:40I am not good on plumbing, in fact I hate to depend on the plumber. I could give you a little advise though. Always buy the best products, those who do a better job and have a longer functioning life, this way you will stay out of trouble, that's my strategy and it seems to work so far...

Kenmore Power Miser 9
Mon, 2008/04/21 - 05:21The pilot light kept going out on my Kenmore Power Miser 9 Hot Water Heater. The owners' manual wasn't much help. It did say to periodically clean the plastic screen at the bottom of the unit-BUT THIS WAS NOT NEARLY ENOUGH.
Thinking that the flame was just fuel and air I looked for the easy solution and reached into the hole that the plastic screen covers with a bottle brush and rubbed it against the bottom of the unit (below where the pilot flame would be if the unit were on-Of course it was NOT) assuming that there must be some sort of screen there to clean.
Thankfully that took care of the problem-No more getting up early to light the pilot so as to have a hot shower!
I didn't think to check the internet until after I'd fixed it ... But then I was thinking that if I had this problem then maybe you, or someone like you, has it also. So I thought I'd share my hot water heater experience.

Kenmore Power Miser 9 Hot Water Heater
Wed, 2008/05/14 - 01:29Hi Tim,
We have had our water heater for just over a year and have had intermitant problems with the pilot going out...also tired of waking up in the wee morning hours to light the pilot to ensure a hot shower! The Gas Co. came out today and advised that they cannot repair it due to the new "sealed" construction of the pilot and thermocoupling. He advised that I contact the manufacturer, but before I made any calls, I researched "recalls" and saw your advice to use a bottle brush to clean the area "under the pilot". It seems to have worked, as the pilot has stayed lit for over 5 hours now. We'll see how it goes...cross your fingers for us and thank you so much for taking the time to post your advice...you may have saved this weary woman's sanity!

Kenmore Power Miser 6
Mon, 2008/04/21 - 20:41I moved into a house that had a 2 yr old Power Miser 6 within months the pilot light started going out. Of course Sears would only cover parts no labor. The technican changed all external parts but still the pilot light would go out. The Sears tech. even complained to me about how bad these units are. Finally, Sears replaced the unit after the tech. told them it was a defect in the unit. But, here we are 1 1/2 later and guess what ... yeap pilot light trouble again. I have just emailed Sears and I sent them the link to this site, they really need to read how many people are having trouble with there products.

Kenmore water heater
Wed, 2008/05/21 - 11:27Well, after battling Sears for 1 years, we are taking a loss and replacing our 2004 Kenmore Power Miser 9 water heater. We repaced burner assembly and thermostat twice, and Sears replace it five times, in ONE year. Pilot light would not stay lit at all. Sears refuse to replace unit because we didn't purchase their extended service contract- that is the only way they honor their "lemon law" product replacement policy. (Sounds like it isn't a "lemon law" policy, but a warranty- they only replace lemons, if you pay for them to replace them!) We are now installing a Bradford White water heater, that upon my research is rated MUCH better! FYI- there is a class action lawsuit against the water heater Lowe's sell for similar problem that consumers are posting on this website. I guess it will only be a matter of time before Sears gets their lawsuit. Meanwhile, I hope to have hot water with my Bradford White, and I wish everyone luck with your lemon. I'm DONE with Sears and their Kenmore products!
