Mistaken Identity: Help with Kenmore Water Heater

  2. Mistaken Identity: How some people confuse my site for others

By Khalid on 2005/11/06 - 16:43, last updated 2006/08/27 - 20:33

Here is an email I got today:

The pilot to my water heater has shut off for no reason. It won't stay lit, even when I attempt to light it. The type is a Kenmore Mixer 6.Please get back to me asap, and tell me if this is a serious problem or if it is a minor detail that can be fixed at home.Thank you for your time,Fernando D.

Probably because of my post on Fixing a Sears Kenmore Water Softner.

Pwr Miser 9-30 gal '99 Vintage

Wed, 2008/10/15 - 19:11

The tank I have (153.337362 (un-sealed burner)); I installed myself in '99. The pilot has gone out for the first time after 9 years of dependable service. Pilot will re-light while depressing & holding control knob for 60 seconds, but goes out as soon as it's released. I suspect the thermocouple. Can anyone affirm or provide any suggestions? Thanks...

Internal Leak

Sat, 2008/10/18 - 13:56

The local gas company will come out to check on gas appliances for free to make sure that everything is working well. I had the gas company check on my water heater which had the same problem as above (i.e., the pilot light kept turning off). The gas company person saw a lot of white flaking and ash and said that there was an internal leak. When the heater turned and the water became hot and the metal expanded, the water started to leak. Otherwise, there was usually no leaking when the unit was not heating the water or off. The internal humidity (steam?) was causing the pilot to turn off.

Sears technician had been out about 8 months ago and did maintenance and cleaning. He told us that we would not need maintenance again for 2 or 3 years. Well, lo and behold. I know that they have a business to run but we as consumers have to be careful and try to do research of our own. I'm glad for sites like this.

In my case, the water heater was still under warranty (Kenmore has 6 year warranties for water heaters) so Sears will provide a new heater but I get to pay for labor and delivery. At least its something.

Power Miser Class action?

Wed, 2008/10/29 - 16:07

I have the same problem with my 8 months old power miser 6.I have talked to AO, Sears and Kenmore with no resolution. Now they blame California Law emissions for the manufacture error. They all know about it but play stupid. Does any body wants to start a class action law suite against all of them?
Where do we start?

Power Mieser Pilot Light

Wed, 2008/10/29 - 19:26

I had the problem with the pilot light after almost two years of satisfactory service.
After repeatedly relighting the pilot, I did not replace the heavy cover that protects the front. The pilot has not gone out since. I would be interested if anyone could duplicate this "fix"
Thanks

I had the same problem. Every

I had the same problem. Every day I had to light the waater heater. Some days 10 times. I broke out the little 1 x 1 window in the front of the water heater and have not had to re-light since. It's been about two weeks. The problem starter when the government got involved in the safety design of the unit. Some idiot set down a can of gas and it exploded when the water heater started. The fix was a very tight air vent in the middle of the bottom that can get plugged after a couple of years or sooner if it is close to a clothes dryer. Breaking out the window gives the unit adequate combustion air.

Hope this helps. Remove the frame around the glass with a pair of pliers.

you voided your heater warranty

Sat, 2008/11/15 - 15:48

That is not the proper way to fix your water heater.
Breaking out the glass might work for a while but is is not the correct way to resolve the problem

also you have voided the warranty on your heater, and it could eventually cause you troubles again...and technically is now considered a fire hazard.

A.O.Smith will eventually have a class action lawsuit against
them when their heater finally has enough complaints on it..

if you want to see why the SEARS heater does not work correctly..go to my web site and look at the pics I have taken
working on this piece of junk

weilhammerplumbing.com

Now to start a class action lawsuit...

....all you have to do is find a class action lawyer
and if they think that they can get you a few hundred bucks
for our troubles, and get for themselves a few million dollars in legal fees.... they might take on your case...

you can find class action lawyers on the internet

just type in ...... sharks.......

Power Mieser Pilot Light

Thu, 2008/11/06 - 11:16

I light my pilot light several times per day and am about to convert to electric before I spend the same amount on 3 service calls and still have the same problem. I am thankful for the internet where you can dig out the truth.
The guys at Sears said, "Oh! I never heard of a problem, no wonder you can shoot a cannon down the aisles at Sears!" They used to be a great store, now they are a joke!"

Kenmore Water Heater Pilot Light Goes Out

Mon, 2008/11/17 - 14:42

My water heater is two years old and has the same problem as everyone else's. The pilot light won't stay lit. Trying to deal with Sears is a disaster. Their service was terrible when they put in the water heater and also now again when it doesn't work only two years later. Sears won't be around much longer. Absolutely awful from the time their stupid automated phone answers my call to the time you wish you could just bash their water heater in with a sledge hammer.
