By Khalid on 2005/11/06 - 16:43, last updated 2006/08/27 - 20:33

Here is an email I got today:

The pilot to my water heater has shut off for no reason. It won't stay lit, even when I attempt to light it. The type is a Kenmore Mixer 6.Please get back to me asap, and tell me if this is a serious problem or if it is a minor detail that can be fixed at home.Thank you for your time,Fernando D.

Probably because of my post on Fixing a Sears Kenmore Water Softner.

Sears Elec PowerMiser12

Wed, 2007/12/05 - 12:46

My electric Power Miser 12 thermostat went bad after a little over one year. Supposed to have a 12 year parts warranty, but of course no one was willing to send me the part. I went through about 8 people. I even called the corporate office and they told me it was State Industries problem(they manufacture the Powermiser) I called them then. State said Sears lied and that Sears is supposed to honor their warranty after they put their name on the product. I too will not buy another Sears product. The junk may come from China but they can do a better job of customer relations and service.

I can't believe this! My pilot won't stay lit either. They've already replaced the entire burner assembly. I will never buy a Sears product again! If there is a class action suit, count me in!

Water heater airflow problems

Sun, 2008/01/06 - 13:51

I bought a gas Power Miser 9 from Sears back in Feb 2004. Six months ago I had the same problem with the pilot not staying on. All I had to do at the time is clean the air intake screen at the bottom of the heater. On New Years day the pilot went out again and I couldn't get it to stay lit. The air intake screen was still clean, so now what? I removed the metal side access cover to the pilot/burner. I then lit the pilot and found that it would stay lit and the burner would work through its normal cycle. This gave me a clue that it had something to do with airflow. I removed the air intake screen and with a small mirror found that there is a hidden ceramic filter at the bottom of the burner assembly and it was dirty with lint. I shut the gas off and vacuumed this (barely accessible) filter with a long thin hose I attached to my shopvac. IMPORTANT: GAS MUST BE OFF. This resolved the problem and the heater works fine for now. What a POOR design! Did the designers think that this filter would never get dirty?

Same problem with the

Same problem with the Powermiser 9. Sears is potentially going under this year, and you can see why. The plumber has been here 3 times so far, and is now cleaning the ceramic screen, but the pilot still went out again! He has a fuse-lines thermocouple, so that's the next step. He suggested just getting a different brand, and eating the finances. This heater is 1 year old, just beyond the warranty. When's the class action suit? I want a piece of Sears ass!!!

Is your water heater still working? We have replaced the burning assembly in ours 4 times in the last 6 months, and the pilot light is still going out.

I've just started to have the same trouble.

Fri, 2008/03/28 - 22:41

If possible could you please send me a picture also because my plumber is coming out tomorrow to see what the problem is although I have just bought the pilot. I also had a water heater that lasted 29 years, it was not a Kenmore though and I thought I was going to have the same 29 years of service.

Kenmore Power Miser water heater problems

Sat, 2010/04/03 - 15:52

History:
I Purchased my Kenmore Power Miser water heater about 3 1/2 to 4 years ago, and about a year ago, I started having problems with the pilot light not staying lit. I replace burner assembly, and the problem seemed to clear up for a few months and then I was back to the same problem again. After awhile the problem got worse. The pilot light would now only stay on after I lit it manually, the water would get hot and the burner would shut off and the pilot light would go out also. I suffered through this problem for several more months and was about to replace the Gas Control Valve when I landed on this forum and read Ozzie's post (see above), concerning the ceramic filter beneath the burner assembly. I removed the plastic screen Air Intake from the bottom of the heater housing and using a flash light, I saw the ceramic filter that Ozzie had described, and it was very dirty.
What I did to correct the problem:
Without removing the burner assembly, the only access to this filter is through the elongated holes in the support at the bottom of the water heater. These elongated holes are covered up by the black plastic Air Intake screen, which I will refer to in the future as the the PRIMARY air intake filter. Using a dryer lint cleaning brush, I remove a lot of built up lint from the bottom of the ceramic filter which I will refer to in the future as the Secondary air intake filter. Just for good measure, I also removed the burner assembly and cleaned the Secondary air intake filter from the top also. Using a small shop vac I cleaned up the burner housing area and reinstalled the burner assembly and the Primary air intake filter. It appears the problem is fixed. My pilot light is staying on after the burner goes off and I now have a continuous supply of hot water.
In my opinion, the problem is not a bad design, its a more of a maintenance issue. Just like your car our your heating system, the filters have to be cleaned to insure proper operation. If you never replaced or clean the filter on your car, the engine would start to falter and give you trouble. If you don't clean or change the filter on your heating and air system, it's not going to work properly. On this hot water heater, if you periodically check and clean the Primary Air Intake Filter clean and at least twice a year clean the Secondary Air Intake Filter, you should never have a problem. If you don't then here you are, looking for answers and spending money for nothing. I think the real problem is not so much a case of a bad design, as it is a case of a poorly written Owner's manual put out by Kenmore. There is no mention of cleaning the Secondary Air Intake Filter anywhere, and the only place there is any mention of cleaning the Primary Air Intake Filter is in the trouble shooting section.
Owner's Recourse:
For those of you that have had a Sears Technician to come out and evaluate this problem and have paid good money for replacement parts and labor without results, I do believe you have a case for a refund of your money for any replacement parts they sold you, or at least a free return trip to clean both the Primary and Secondary Air Intake Filters, which they should have done on the first visit. The truth be told, the Sears Tech probably didn't know about the secondary Air Intake filter, but that's not your problem. they are the "EXPERTS" in the industry, they are suppose to know there products and how to repair them. Also, For the service call, this is not about warranty, which is usually 90 days, this is about negligence or ineptitude, for which there is no time limit. If you payed for a local Sears service tech to come out and fix this problem, and they just replaced a burner and or the gas control valve, and he did not clean the Secondary air intake filter, I would call and complain to Sears, because the first thing they should have done, before they replaced any parts, was clean both filters (screens).

Ceramic filter- Sears water heater hotline 800-877-6420

Sun, 2010/12/12 - 11:33

I agree with what you say above yet the owners manual that I have on my 153.33410HA model provides no information on this filter. I found out by contacting the water heater hotline number for Sears heater manufacturers at 800-877-6420. Most of us would assume gas valve or thermocouple but I did see that in observing my flame on the burner that it had some orange indicating that it was oxygen starved. The water tank owners manual should show this filter in their parts diagram and also reference this in the troubleshooting section for home owners that do their own work. I had a costly repair by a plumber who was not familiar with this filter until the information was shared with him on the government mandate to install these ceramic filters after April 2003. They clog up with lint and prevent good airflow. Cleaning these should be from the bottom per the hotline and they suggested using a slender long bristle toilet brush and rub back and forth from the bottom through the primary air filter area.
